La neuropatía diabética (ND), una complicación frecuente que afecta a una porción significativa de pacientes, se vincula estrechamente con el control glucémico inadecuado y otros factores metabólicos. El propósito de esta revisión fue analizar críticamente la influencia de la educación como estrategia coadyuvante en la terapéutica de la neuropatía en pacientes con DM. Se realizó una revisión narrativa bibliográfica de artículos primarios en revistas científicas publicados entre 2015 y 2025, utilizando bases de datos como Medline (Pubmed), Proquest, EBSCO, Biblioteca Virtual de Salud y SciELO. Los descriptores clave fueron diabetes mellitus, neuropatía y educación terapéutica en diabetes. Los hallazgos confirman que la hiperglucemia sostenida y otros factores de riesgo contribuyen al desarrollo de la ND, cuya compleja fisiopatología impacta severamente la calidad de vida de los pacientes. La educación es un componente clave en el manejo de la diabetes y la prevención de complicaciones como la polineuropatía. La Teoría Social Cognitiva de Bandura y el Autocuidado, emergen como herramientas cruciales para empoderar al paciente, fomentar la autoadherencia y optimizar su calidad de vida. En conclusión, la educación es una estrategia indispensable para mejorar el control de la DM y mitigar el impacto de la ND.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease of increasing prevalence characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a frequent complication that affects a significant portion of patients and is closely linked to inadequate glycemic control and other metabolic factors. The purpose of this review was to critically analyze the influence of education as an adjuvant strategy in the treatment of neuropathy in patients with DM. A narrative bibliographic review of primary articles in scientific journals published between 2015 and 2025 was conducted, using databases such as Medline (Pubmed), Proquest, EBSCO, Biblioteca Virtual de Salud, and SciELO. The key descriptors were diabetes mellitus, neuropathy, and therapeutic education in diabetes. The findings confirm that sustained hyperglycemia and other risk factors contribute to the development of DN, whose complex pathophysiology severely impacts the quality of life of patients. Education is a key component in the management of diabetes and the prevention of complications such as polyneuropathy. Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory and self-care emerge as crucial tools for empowering patients, promoting self-adherence, and optimizing quality of life. In conclusion, education is an essential strategy for improving DM control and mitigating the impact of DN.]]></p></abstract>
