<self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100401&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100401&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2790-83052022000100401&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La prediabetes es reconocida como un estado metabólico y como un factor predisponente individual a una alta probabilidad de progresar a diabetes en el futuro, personas con prediabetes tienen un riesgo elevado de desarrollar patologías asociadas con esa enfermedad, como retinopatía diabética, neuropatías, nefropatías y complicaciones macrovasculares. Se estima que la incidencia de Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 (DMT2) en pacientes con prediabetes es significativamente mayor que en paciente con tolerancia a la glucosa normal (TGN). En los sujetos que fueron diagnosticados con IFG e IGT en combinación, el porcentaje anual de riesgo de desarrollar DMT2 incrementó en 10%. Esto sugiere que la IFG e IGT tienen un rol aditivo al factor de riesgo de padecer DMT2. La aparición de patologías cardiovasculares y la mortalidad asociada en individuos con prediabetes en comparación con NGT es conocido por ser significativamente elevado (mayor al 50%). Debido a que la progresión a DMT2, enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica (ECVA) o complicaciones micro o macrovasculares pueden ser prevenidas, la aproximación clínica debe invertir más tiempo en desarrollar un abordaje sistémico, enfocado en la heterogeneidad de la fisiopatología de esta condición. El propósito de esta revisión es actualizar conceptos sobre esta condición que pasa desapercibida para muchos médicos no especialistas en el tema y que realmente hay que considerarla como una condición de riesgo importante para la DM2 y la ECVA.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Prediabetes is recognised as an important metabolic state; as well as an individual predisposing factor to a high probability of future progression to diabetes, individuals with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing many of the pathologies associated with that disease, such as diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy and macrovascular complications. The risk for T2DM in prediabetic subjects is higher compared with those with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). In the subjects who were diagnosed with IFG and IGT in combination, the annual percentage for the risk of developing T2DM increased by 10%. This suggests that IFG and IGT have additive roles in predicting the risk of developing T2DM. The occurrence of cardiovascular disease and associated mortality in prediabetic subjects compared with NGT are known to be significantly elevated in nearly over 50%. Because of the progression to T2DM, ACVD or micro or macrovascular complications can be prevented, the clinical approach must invest more time to develop a systematic approach, so individual management is required given the observed significant pathophysiological heterogeneity in this condition. The purpose of this revision is to update current definitions about this condition which may pass unnoticed by many medical doctors, and which we must consider as an important risk factor for T2DM and CVD.]]></p></abstract>
