The reproductive biology of Talinum paniculatum (Portulacaceae), a hermaphrodite herb in a remnant of semideciduous forest in Caracas, Venezuela, was studied. Pollination biology, breeding system, and fruit and seed set were determined. The flowers were actinomorphic, yellowish, small, and live for only four hours. These floral traits were correlated with the pollinator types and sizes, which were represented by bees from different families (Apidae and Halictidae). Pollen load deposited naturally on the stigmas was 2.94 times larger than the number of ovule per flower, and the percentage of germination was 24.9%. The natural production of fruit per flower and seed per ovule was 60.4% and 86.5%, respectively. The lowest level of ovule abortion and the absence of seed abortion contributed to the relatively high level of seed produced per ovule per inflorescence (52.3%). T. paniculatum has a mating system biased toward autogamy, which is correlated with a low polen/ovule ratio (136.1), low pre-(0.39) and post-cigotic (0.03) biomass allocation to male function in flower, and a low pericarp/seed ratio (0.57). The proportion of fruit and seed produced by self-pollination was significantly higher than the proportion produced by cross-pollination which suggest that high levels of autogamy may be associated with outbreeding depression, favouring genotypes highly adapted to small forest fragments located in urban areas.
The seasonally flooded forest of the Sipapo River is located in the northern Amazonas State, in the fitogeographic region Guayana Venezolana. Afloristic inventory was carried out in the Sipapo River. Revision of previous collections from the herbaria MER, MY, PORT, VEN and of databases from herbaria MO and NYwere done, in order to elaborate the floristic catalogue of this forest. The flora is constituted for 92 spermatophytes families, 328 genera and 614 species, of these, 36 species are endemic to the Venezuelan Guayana. For every species in the catalog, common names, habitat, habit, herbarium references and geographical distribution in Venezuela and its surroundings are given.
In this work the presence of the species Acetabularia myriospora Joly & Cordeiro-Marino is reported for the first time in the Venezuelan coast, collected in the intertidal zone of the oriental coast in the Vargas State. These specimens were described and illustrated. Some comments about the taxonomic problems of the genus Acetabularia are also mentioned.
The anatomic techniques used in atraqueophyta are based on complex and expensive procedures; due to these reasons, a simple and economic method for the anatomic study of macroalgae was developed. This method consists on dehydration with glycerin, rehydration until ethanol 50%, staining with safranin-toloudine blue, inclusion on paraffin and preparation of permanent films. The studied macroalgae come from cultures of Gracilariopsis tenuifrons of Gelca C.A. at the Araya Peninsula (Venezuela) and from wild population of Gracilaria chilensis in Conception Bay in Chile. The slides obtained let us characterize the cellular types present in the thallus of these species.
