It has been tailored to meet the needs of the seismological observatories interested in gathering, structuring and publishing on the Internet the necessary data to carry out microseismicity studies. The system was designed to facilitate its operation and maintenance at a relatively low cost. This goal was achieved by exploiting the capabilities of the networks based on personal computers and on the family of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Real time data acquisition is performed using an A/D card and a driver, both of which were specially designed to detect seismic events. The time baseline of the seismic records is automatically synchronized with the time signal from a satellite clock, obtaining the millisecond accuracy necessary for precise timing of the seismic signals. The seismic detection algorithm work through both, the time and frequency domain, using neural networks for the recognizance of seismic wave patterns. Triggering of several seismic stations is used as an additional discrimination criterion. Off-line seismic data processing can be performed on any PC connected to the local network or TCP/IP. The processing includes seismogram visualization, arrival times and polarities picking, hypocenter locations, plotting epicenter maps and access to seismic libraries. Moreover, capabilities for dynamic publication in web sites is provided via an interactive catalog, which also allows seismologists to locate through the WWW the information needed for their research. The software is interactive and integrated and, following a set of rules, it can be extended with new functions. All information, either from individual events or from groups of events, including their seismograms, can be displayed using an information base, which can be managed through the Internet. Most of the versatility of this information base is due to its capability to store and relate instrumental data from seismic events with digital documents, allowing several ways of searching and collection information. This work allowed the automation of the Venezuelan Andes Seismic Network operated by the Los Andes University Geophysical Laboratory (http://lgula.ciens.ula.ve) at the beginning of the nineties. Its algorithm for event discrimination, and capabilities for integrated management of the information and low cost operational maintenance, have been tested in seismic networks in southern Venezuela for almost a decade, being accumulated the biggest seismological information base available about South West of Venezuela.
Evaluation of the natural illumination and sunlighting of bioclimatic houses for hot humid climates http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200002&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es In intertropical latitudes such as Venezuela with warm humid climates, the analysis of the natural illumination and the sunlighting, allow establishing parameters for the adequate design of the openings in a construction (form, size, protection), since by them penetrates the greatest quantity of heat by the influence of the direct and diffuse solar radiation. This article is referred to the study of both variables in a bioclimatic house design for the population of Tamare, a locality of the Zulia State, Venezuela. In the same are exposed two aspects: 1) The quantitative analysis of the natural illumination through an experimental study that includes measurements of the exterior horizontal illuminance and interior illuminance in a physical model of the bioclimatic house; 2) The study of the sunlighting through a three-dimensional digital model. This work has allowed determining if the light levels are sufficient for the accomplishment of the indoor, or if these are higher or lower. In this case it will permit to choose an adequate design strategy for obtaining the light comfort, going from the use of artificial light used in a conscious way to save energy, to the design of elements that allow the control of the solar radiation and at the same time permit to have the necessary light conditions to accomplish the activities.
Treatment for domestic wastewater by using aerated ponds http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200003&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es The study was undertaken using a pilot plant of aerated ponds which consists of two systems called A and B, each one with three-tank system in series in order to evaluate the performance of the plant. The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5,20) and soluble biochemical oxygen demand (BODsoluble), at the outlet of the A system, were 20 mg/L and 6 mg/L, respectively, very similar to those obtained from the B system where their values were 15 mg/L and 5 mg/L, respectively, this means that they can be achieved the same removal levels for both the A system, with one-day retention time in each pond and for the B system, with two-days retention time in each pond. The removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) for both A and B systems were very similar, 81 and 85%, respectively. The data obtained from the different species of nitrogen at the effluent from the two systems of aerated ponds demonstrated that were an effective nitrification process. The biological treatment in aerated ponds is adequate to handle this kind of wastewater, since it is possible to get, with a single pond, a removal to 91% of the organic load in terms of BOD with one-day retention time.
Optimum time of hydraulic retention for the anaerobic treatment of light oil production wastewater http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200004&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es UASB reactor of 4 l was used under mesofilic conditions to degradate oil production wastewater from the light oil of Venezuelan industry. Several hydraulic retention times were used to change the organic load on the system. The carried out analysis during the experimentation were: organic matter removal as COD total phenol removal, methane production and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. The investigation demonstrated that the optimum retention time for the treatment system for this type of wastewater was found to be 15 h, corresponding this to an organic load of 2 KgCOD/m³d, condition in which de COD removal and methane percentage were over 80% and the total phenol removal of 60%. For a retention time under 10 h, an inhibition from the methanogenic bacteria was observed, due to the high concentration on VFA, which limits the organic matter transformation present on the crude light oil wastewater to methane.
Optimization of the potentiometric technique with ion selective electrode for evaluating sulfate ion in aqueous samples http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200005&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es An optimization of the potentiometric technique using ion selective electrodes for sulfate analysis is discussed. The determination of SO=4 ion in water column samples (Latitude N 09°51’17", Lengt W 71º31’41") of the Lake Maracaibo was performed following the optimum parameters. Response time 30 s shorter was exhibited when using NaNO3 as ISA solution compared with conventional NaClO4 ISA solution. The titrant solution containing Pb(NO3)2 does not interfere with the lead ion selective electrode, the optimum titration rate being 0,008 mL/s. Sulfate ion was titrated against standard Pb(NO3)2 4,83x10-3 mol/L solution using a lead ion selective electrode vs Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Samples of water colected every two m from 1 m to 27 m depth were analyzed, and levels of SO=4 ion from 171,84 ± 4,26 to 306,72 ± 9,46 mg/L were found. Significative differente values of sulfate vs depth are shown within 95% of probability.
Electrochemical chlorination of phenylnonane http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200006&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es By using phase transference catalysis, anodic chlorination of phenylnonane in a two immiscible liquids (dichloromethane-water) with tetrabutylammonium as the transference agent; pchlorononylbenzene was obtained as the main product with an organic yield of 47%, which means an improvement compared with 24% obtained when using a single solvent. Formation of p-chlorononylbenzene depends upon the nature and concentration of the transference agent, pH, temperature, and oxidation potential. The best conditions were reached using 0.3M Bu4NHSO4, at a pH ranging within 4 and 6, at 35°C and 1.70 V vs Ag/Ag+. Our results suggest that at those potentials below the oxidation peak of the aromatic, the formation of the chlorinated species is due to a chemical reaction between the electrochemically generated chlorinating species and the neutral molecule of phenylnonane. On the other hand, at those potentials above the oxidation peak, the reaction occurs between the chlorinating species and a cationic species generated by oxidation of phenylnonane. To confirm our results, experiments were run in acetonitrile-water, showing that at low potentials (~1.40 V vs Ag/Ag+), 20% of p-chlorononylbenzene is formed by direct reaction between the chlorinating species and the phenylnonane while at higher potentials, 27% of p-chlorononylbenzene and 34% of nonylacetamide is produced by reaction of the chlorinating species and the electrolytic medium with the organic cationic intermediate species.
Electrochemical behaviour of carbon steel in oil (kerosene) in water emulsion in stagnation conditions http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0254-07702002000200007&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es Oil in water emulsions, which contain water as a continuous phase, show good conditions to allow a flow of electric current. Therefore, the corrosion process may be promoted for this kind of system. This study point out results obtained in an interface of kerosene in water emulsion and carbon steel; where the kerosene-water ratio varies from 0 to 70%. The emulsion was in stagnated conditions during the tests. The results were analyzed with the electrochemical impedance technique and the behaviour of the metalemulsion interface represent using equivalent circuits under the different conditions tested. The corrosion type was uniform without any evidence of localized attack due to kerosene contents.
