Some 27098 individual records from five registered Brahman herds in Venezuela, were analyzed with a general lineal model in order to evaluate inbreeding levels for the period 2001 to 2012 and its possible negative effects on weight at time of birth, 205 days and 548 days of age. Besides inbreeding value, year and month of birth, sex and mother age were included in the model. General average of inbreeding was 0.574%, with a range from 0.37 to 2.20 for individual herds. Inbred animals averaged from 0.95 to 4.53%. Less than 2.5% of the animals in the herds showed values higher than 12.8%. It was not detected any important increment of inbreeding value with time. Weighted averages showed negative regressions of - 68.4, - 283.3 and - 614.6 gr associated with an increment of 1% of inbreeding, which means loss of 39, 163 and 352 gr by animal at birth, 205 days and 548 days of age, respectively. It is concluded that permanent mating programs in the herds must be maintained in order to minimize inbreeding effects.
The objective of this research was to study the genetic diversity of a population of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) in the municipality of Sahagún, Department of Córdoba, Colombia (8 ° 57 ‘02’ ‘North and 75 ° 26 ‘44’ ‘West). From the analysis performed, it was possible to determine that all the microsatellites used were polymorphic, with 3 (S0385) and 13 (SW780) alleles, with an average number of alleles of 6.05 for a total of 121 alleles. The expected mean heterozygosity was 0.5219 and the observed was 0.5581. The values of the Polymorphism Informational Content (PIC) ranged from 0.2542 to 0.7021 for loci S0385 and SW780, respectively. The results allow us to conclude that the domestic pig in Sahagún, has a high degree of genetic variability.
Brucellosis is considered one of the most important zoonotic diseases in the world because of its implications for public health and its impact on livestock production. In the equine species, the presentation of this disease is important, because these animals are potential hosts and contribute to the introduction of the disease in unaffected areas, as well as to the maintenance of this disease in endemic zones. In the Department of Córdoba, Colombia, there have been no recent studies that establish the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of the disease in equids. The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of Brucella sp. in equids of the department of Córdoba. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out involving 506 equids from 14 municipalities of the department. Three species from 46 farms were studied: horses (n=257), asses (n=130) and mules (n=119). The techniques used for the serological diagnosis were: rapid agglutination, which was performed in 506 equids, using the Bengal Rose (RB) method; and the confirmatory method was performed on 23 equids, using the competitive ELISA tecnique (C-ELISA). Conventional PCR was performed by amplifying the IS711 region of Brucella sp. from exudate samples (n=2) and EDTA blood (n=4). The results of the study showed that the seroprevalence of brucellosis in equids was 4.5% (23/506) using the RB methodology, with the following distribution by species: 20 horses, 2 asses and 1 mule. With the C-ELISA technique, the seroprevalence was 4.3% (1/23), whereas by PCR no bacterial DNA was detected in the six samples analyzed. The positivity in farms was 28.2% (13/46). In conclusion, the seroprevalence figures obtained in the present study demonstrate the importance of epidemiological surveillance in the different species susceptible to brucellosis.
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with Canavalia ensiformis ground seeds on hematology and blood chemistry of West African lambs. For that, a total of 21 lambs (grouped by similar weights and parasite load) were randomly divided into three homogeneous groups of seven animals each (n=7). The animals grazed 6 hours/day, after supplementation with one of the following three treatments: T (not supplemented with canavalia); C (supplemented with 2.5g canavalia/kg BW); and C+ (supplemented with canavalia 5g/kg BW). Blood variables were determined through sampling biweekly and analyzed through ANOVA. The results of the investigation showed that the C+ group caused anemia, as reflected by a lower hematocrit value (25.6%), when compared to T (28.3%) and C (26.2%); (P=0.0003). Furthermore, hemoglobin levels were also lower for C+ (8.8 g /dL), as compared to T (9.8 g /dL) and C (9.15 g / dL); (P=0.0006). Alanine transaminase, glucose and cholesterol values of all animals were within reference ranges for the species. In conclusion, supplementation with a higher amount of canavalia seeds (5g/kg BW), can cause signs of anemia in growing tropical lambs. In contrast, a lesser proportion of this substance (2.5g/Kg BW) did not affect hematology and blood chemistry.
The aim of the present investigation was to determine the metabolic profile of female haired ewes under grazing management, during the gestation-lactation period, in the Department of Cordoba, Colombia. Blood samples of 56 haired ewes were taken in the last third of gestation and during 90 days of lactation at sheep farms located in three sub-regions of the Department of Cordoba. Blood concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, β-hydroxybutyrate, total proteins, albumin, globulin, urea, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) were determined. The information was analyzed through an ANAVAR to determine the existence of statistically significant differences (P≤0.05) between periods; and by aTukey test for comparison of means, for which the SAS statistical software was used. The mean values for the metabolic variables found were: 62.24 ± 11.76 mg/dL for glucose; 47.27 ± 24.62 mg/dL for triglycerides; 84.80 ± 59.09 mg/dL for cholesterol; 0.02 ± 0.03 mg/dL for β-hydroxybutyrate; 5.82 ± 1.07 g/dL for total proteins; 2.21 ± 0.61 g/dL for albumin; 3.64 ± 1.13 g/dL for globulins; 32.50 ± 15.85 mg/dL for urea; 11.37±2.34 mg/dL for Ca; 5.95±2.31 mg/ dL for P; and 2.28±0.45 mg/dL for Mg. Statistical differences between farms and periods studied were found, with a decrease in the means of the variables under study, as calving approached, and a recovery of the appropriate concentrations at the end of lactation, pointed to the need of supplementing the primary food with adequate amounts of energy, proteins and minerals, during the last third of gestation and the first 60 days of lactation.
