The article deals with the paradox that emerges, on one hand, from the need of foundationalism and, on the other, by its impossibility. Faced with the problem, it suggests a reading of Wittgenstein’s On Certainty which allows a different conception of foundationalism - one in which the fundament and the founded belong to different spheres, and where truth is no longer linked to certainty. Due to Wittgenstein’s lack of clarity regarding the required changes in the certainty system, ideas from Gadamer’s philosophy must be considered in order to provide an adequate reading of the sections 94-99 of On Certainty.
We show the traditional doctrine of simple conversion of categorical and modal quantified sentences. We do this by resorting to the medieval analysis of sentences by means of identity sentences which result necessary when they are true and impossible when when they are false. To simplify we reduce our universe of discourse to small “worlds” of individuals and properties; we use standard symbols but add a new one for the modal treatment. Epicuro: ¿Hedonista psicológico o ético? http://ve.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0798-11712007000300003&lng=es&nrm=iso&tlng=es This article proposes that the type of hedonism found in Epicurus’ ethics is ethical, not psychological, hedonism. This paper also objects to using doxographical reports as the basis for developing an interpretation of Epicurus philosophy when primary source materials are available. Doxography should be used to clarify the primary source materials, not the other way around.
This article is ordered in three parts or moments: first, the foundations for a reflection on the theme presented, which are akin to those of Gaston Bachelard, though not always coincident with his thought. In second place, a dialogue with the poetics of the elements of Bachelard is presented; in third place, conclusions about these reflections are stated.
The phenomenon of slavery was current during all of the America’s colonial times. This phenomenon has its roots in classical era, and the study of its manifestations in these last times normally follows the study of it in antiquity. Unexplainably, there is usually an almost general silence with respect to slavery in the Middles Ages: if in these times the number of slaves grew o diminished and why, or even if slavery as such existed -and how- or not. This article Intend to contribuye with informations and opinions on those questions.
