The political thought of Antonio Gramsci has not lost relevance and validity in its interpretation and criticism of the modern capitalist State. His theoretical and practical contributions are many, but this work intends to highlight his interesting concept of the political party as a “modern Prince,” as a group, social and collective “intellectual” at the service of constructing a liberating social conscience of popular will. This study also presents what “socialism” represented for Gramsci, the project of a regulated society that is built progressively among all its citizens, and “radical democracy,” which he understands as an ethical-political action that generates a new social hegemony (of the public over the private) that is more consensual and less coercive.
This article states the contribution of phenomenology to a renovation of the human sciences, particularly in the field of literary studies in Latin America. First, it postulates the legitimacy of the Latin American scholar’s assuming a thought that is situated, geocultural and historically located in America. Inherent to this statement is the recognition that Iberoamerican culture is a mixed culture in which dissimilar elements coming from two great ethnic and cultural branches are present: a culture of image and rite and a culture of concept and book. Secondly, an attempt is made to delineate some basic concepts of phenomenology and its method, considering phenomenology as the inflection point for European thought about non-western cultures. Third, attention is called to cultural reading as practiced first by the American writer and later thematized from the phenomenological viewpoint by Rodolfo Kusch in his works on Andean man and American geoculture. Finally, the study points out the distance that has resulted between the last stage of Euro-Atlantic cultural and literary theory, marked by the atmosphere of deconstructivism and post modernity, and the process of Americ can transmodernity, heading toward its stage of cultural self-awareness. Consequently, the historical, philosophical and political need of South American nations to reaffirm constituting and integrating tools is produced. Within this framework, we postulate the incorporation of phenomenology into Latin American hermeneutics, from the viewpoint of situated thought.
The following article, based on a review and critical analysis of sources and secondary bibliography, presents a reading of so-called Cultural Studies, indicating some of their weaknesses as theoretical-political thought. The analysis concentrates on the limits encountered regarding the way such studies conceive society: as a more or less random superposition of cultural fragments, speeches, etc. The assumed viewpoint, according to which “it is the social being of man that determines his conscience,” makes it possible to note the historic and social conditions that have made the present forms of the Cultural Studies possible at the same time that it questions some of the present tendencies marked by the absence of dialectic and the totality category.
This article attempts to recover the arguments of Spanish philosopher María Zambrano, particularly from works expounding her thoughts regarding the notion of person, and to demonstrate how such a reflection engenders the constitution of the idea of history for western man, characterized by an ethical sense of society and by criticism of the power of the individual that is covered up by the State. In the analysis, the tragedy of the West is emphasized, and this is done through two pairs of contrary ideas: individual/person and mass/people. The people as well as the people are chosen as the protagonist of an ethical history.
This essay deals with the energy crisis in the context of a philosophical reflection about the environment. The text presents a general view of the subject of energy and delves into the concepts of responsibility and care expressed by thinkers Hans Jonas and Martin Heidegger.
The text attempts to review what has been the utopian propensity in Latin America, based primarily on the work of Fernando Aínsa, taking into account the round trip utopia has made between the Old and New Worlds and its connection with the process of training republican youth during times when the more utopian and republican the constitutional charters are, the more despotic the governments become in turn. This breach between the dreamed-of utopia and the experienced reality is present once again in the Cuban revolution, the current Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela financed by oil, the modern gold, and in the seduction they awaken when observed from afar.
The aim of this work is to analyze the role that Agnes Heller gives to utopia in the framework of the theory of history. To accomplish this, the relation she establishes between future-utopia, change-utopia and progress-utopia will be analyzed. After the analysis and explanation of these conceptual pairs, the paper will attempt to determine the characteristics and functions of utopia in relation to history, conceiving it as a category of analysis that allows for identifying and defining expectations for change and renovation for a time period or social group.
John Holloway, the well-known sociologist who revolutionized the academic environment and political debates with his book Change the World without Taking Power, visited Argentina again in September, 2006, to give seminars. This dialogue took place in the city Mar del Plata. In it, notions of criticism, crisis and class struggle are reviewed in the light of the Marxist tradition; and the centrality of the double character of labor within the capitalist system is emphasized as a theoretical tool of the first order for going back to thinking radically about social change.
