From ancient times when man mastered his fears about the sea, it became the favorite scenario for trade, cultural changes, explorations and conquests, for wars, finally, for all purposes of entire and ambitious rulers to dominate and not be dominated. It was the second item after the land appropriation. Rome in the imperial period, made the sea and the Mare Nostrum sustained such “property” in statutory law as exclusive prerogative. Not only were Roman obstinate in professing that policy later lusos centuries and Castilians tried the same exemptions with the discovery of the New World (1492), when favored by grace of the most Catholic leaders His Holiness the Pope, one year after such proportional event were distributed every inch the high sea waters of the vast Atlantic. But, the right of communication of people, he conceived, contradictory to these hegemonic pretensions sacromonárquicas, by Francisco de Vitoria and Fernando Vázquez de Menchaca medieval intellectuals, who conceived the oceans as part of the public and public places, ended up waking up in the kingdoms relegated from that division by apostolic authority, equal interest to receive a part of that heritage. Thus, English first, followed by the French and the Dutch past, conjured putting the privileges of its European neighbors, a plan that would allow them to be also of property and riches beyond their realms. So that he earned the ancestral evil piratical action, thus breaking the papal provision. Therefore, in this paper we will discuss the issue of official corsopiratería designs brought to the Vatican, and the overwhelming military and legal responses conducted by the kings of Spain.
The existence of important deposits of salt of excellent quality in Araya’s region, attracted to his coasts from 1599 the Dutches, those who started exploiting them in their benefit, putting with it in danger the effective domain that Spain had on these lands, preventing the commercial activities of the region, and facing militarily, to both nations what historically it is known as The First Battle of the Salt, and which ended in Araya with the Spanish victory in the Naval Battle of the Port of Cove of Aff rays in 1605. Nevertheless, the same one was not definitive, and later, during the War of Thirty Years, Spain and Holland become absorbed in The Second Battle of the Salt, which has as scenes: Araya, from 1621 to 1623, when the presence of the castle removes permanently the Dutches; The Tortoise island, from 1627 to 1638, when Benito Arias Montalvo after defeating and to throw the Dutches for the force, floods the salt mine rendering useless it; and the river mouth of the river Unare, from 1633 to 1640, when Don Juan de Orpín, after expelling them from the fort that they constructed there, sinks the salt mine with sweet water, destroying it, together with all others that existed in the region, with what he put end definitively to the presence of Holland in the Venezuelan salt mines, until in the Peace of Westphalia or Munster of 1648, it was agreed formally between both nations, to avoid this activity in the Earth of Grace.
In this research, we reconstructed in Google Earth the course followed by the ship San Ignacio of the Guipúzcoa Company in its third voyage, from the port of Pasajes to the port of La Guaira, which lasted from July 20th to September 3rd 1738. To achieve this, we have relied on the ship log of the pilot Joseph Ugalde. The goal of the research is to determine the accuracy of the estimates of the coordinates, latitude and longitude, which are reflected in the log. We had to make a correction of longitude, as it was based on the meridian of Tenerife and not on the Greenwich Meridian, as it is done today. Because we did not get the exact references of both meridians difference in degrees, minutes, and seconds, we had to estimate it based on an observation made by the pilot of the west cape of Madeira on August 3 rd , 1738. Once we had corrected the coordinates of the log, we plotted each point in Google Earth and joined them with a straight line. The estimated path of the ship is logical, even when it is obvious that is has a margin of error. We conclude that measurements of the pilot are considerably accurate. However, the details of astronomical observation methods used by the sailors of the Guipuzcoa Company to determine the latitude and longitude of the point where they were is for further study. This way, we could explain the accuracy of the relevant observations.
During the centuries of Spanish domination in America, fortification and defense of the colonies overseas was one of the most pressing tasks of the Crown, whose main objective was to protect the domains purchased from the constant raids by pirates and privateers, as well as hold off the frequent ethno-social uprisings in the Ocean Sea territories aquende him.
Traditionally historians have addressed the question of the return of the English Habana giving greater weight to economic, political and military factors, showing little interest in religious explanations or motivations that might have the British government. Although this element was not relevant, this article aims to analyze the religious background of Havana capture and siege considering that the naval battle and the surrender of the city also symbolized the existing religious rivalry between England and Spain in the colonial context. Both powers sustained its colonial policies in the prevalence of official religions as monopolistic ideology, complementing the political and economic domination of the various population centers. In Havana case, the heterogeneous and divided English Protestantism was a point of conflict over Catholicism, religion that plays an important role in the possession of Havana with a creole population mostly Catholic.
From a transport perspective, the Orinoco River acts as an arterial road that penetrates Venezuela linking the Plains region (Llanos) and Guayana. Its tributaries also connect the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of the Conquest, it was used to create settlements, to pacify regions, to transport goods and people, and in the quest for the legendary El Dorado. Nowadays it is the principal mode of transport for the output of the Guayana Heavy Industries. River navigation, especially of unpowered boats, depends on the hydrometereological regime of the basin of the river. In 1918 records with systematic measurement of the variables of that regime were created at Ciudad Bolivar. Prior to this, the information source for the effects of the fluctuation of these variables on navigability was the stories of travelers and chroniclers. In this work, we study these stories, and present records variations on increasing river flows and currents in the basin of the Orinoco, and their influence on sailing unpowered boats.
The backward motion in space of our present maps, turned into cartoons of the Uti Possidetis, represents the most uncomfortable evidence of our careless attitude toward our territory, and also casts a shameful shadow over the skills employed in the negotiations undertaken by national diplomacy. Actually the plenipotentiaries who had to handle Colombia’s expansionist foreign policy during the 19th century forgot to take a cursory glance through seafaring documentation written by pilots, skippers, navy officers and sailors in general, when sailing hadn’t still lost its struggle against the steam boat, and the maritime ventures depended on the goodwill or ires of the ocean. For if the bad temper of the sea is to be considered, Colombian waters experienced the worst that could be imagined. If this permanent and unaltered telluric fact along the centuries -and is registered in hundreds of navigation journals and course logs- had been known, studied, analyzed and used by our delegates on limits affairs, Colombia would have had to forget Peninsula and Gulf altogether. This work exposes a brief review of the negotiations by our diplomacy between 1833 and 1891 -the years marking the start of discussions and the end of diplomatic litigation by the judgment of the Spanish arbitrator, respectively- and identifies the lack of a coherent strategy based on the maritime documentation mentioned above as title deeds in favor of our country. It reviews the testimonials of seafarers that experienced the adversities of the immense Neogranadine seas, explaining the usefulness of the journals and course logs during the maritime voyages, and the inclusion in their courses of all kind of details over the incidences occurred during the Caribbean and transatlantic trips.
During Guzman Blanco’s “Septenio”, a series of policy changes and reforms in the military structure were made in order to achieve peace in the country. However, to achieve this purpose, it was convenient: renew the existing sail warships; improve naval stations; create a nautical school; implement a shipyard’s project including a dock in Puerto Cabello; build port captaincies and lighthouses; dredging the Maracaibo bar; constitute a port police; among other changes that would benefi t the sea, river and lake navigation. In this sense, the acquisition of armed steamships was not only necessary but also timely to dominate and defend a broad spectrum of possible invasions to the coasts, ports blockades , weapons smuggling into enemy positions and the mobilization of ground troops at high speed to repel opposing forces that threaten to undermine the peace project established, however, the greatest contribution during regeneration of Guzman Blanco (1873-1876), was the incorporation of coal and iron to the consolidation of Navy, which marked a milestone in the Venezuelan Naval History.
The historical evolution of the use of water ways in what is today Venezuela began, since time immemorial, with the spontaneity and naturalness that characterized the lifestyles of the first human groups, many of whom left for nomadism settle on land plains, thanks to the great rivers and their tributaries, whose riverside were their seat population was achieved. In fact, the foundation of the town of El Baúl, in 1744, was executed with aboriginal transferred from the Apure and Orinoco, with clear example of the close historical relationship that has existed between the great river and Cojedes state. In 1830 they used movements from El Baúl, the waterway system Cojedes river, tracing upstream to the current Portuguese state lands, and downstream by several waterways that lead to San Fernando de Apure and Bolívar City. Then in the second half of the nineteenth century there was an important development in the area due to the Venezuelan plains formed by use of Cojedes, Portuguesa, Apure and Orinoco rivers axis. From 1880 steam navigation in Venezuela increased and consequently, there presence of these vessels in the port of El Baúl.
History is full of examples that showing sea power is crucial to the fate of nations, so the navy of a country becomes much more than a simple instrument of defense; it is an institution able of projecting power, economy and culture of the nation that it belongs.
