The spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus crocodilus) is a species raised in captivity that can suffer from stress, which, along with other factors, promotes growth delay and mortality during the critical time of growth. Some investigators report the use of antibiotics to counteract those effects. The growth of a population of spectacle caimans raised in captivity and fed with a diet supplemented with antibiotic (virginiamycin) was compared with the growth of the spectacle caiman population fed with a control diet was assessed. A total of 600 animals born through incubation at the Kiubo farm were used. Before the onset of the experiment, the animals were measured, weighed, clinically evaluated, and randomly distributed in four sections in an Australian tank. The following variables were measured using a metric tape: total length (TL), neck thickness (NT), base of the tail thickness (BTT). The weight was recorded with an electronic balance. The animals were submitted to the following treatments (T): Treatment 1 (T1): commercial diet + fresh animal protein; Treatment 2 (T2): commercial diet + fresh animal protein + antibiotic. The evaluations were carried out in three phases: Initial phase, Intermediate phase, and Final Phase. A totally randomized design with a covariance analysis was performed to analyze the data. The results show that during the initial phase, all variables showed statistically significant (P≤0.05) differences, reaching T1 the highest averages. During the intermediate phase, significant differences (P≤0.05) were found for BTT, TL, and weight. The NT was not significant. During the final stage, statistical differences (P≤0.05) were recorded among T for BTT and TL, but no differences were found for NT and weight. For some variables, T1 was better than T2, but both diets contributed to the increment of growth rate. It is concluded that the use of antibiotics supplemented in the diet, increases production costs and that breeding in captivity depends more on good handling.
In shrimp (L. vannamei) farming, alterations in health and in productive performance occur. These disorders result from the presence of ciliated epibionts protozoan. In Cuba, there is no data available on how their expression varies as the culture progresses. The purpose of this study was to determine the general prevalence, the specific prevalence, and the degree of severity of the effects caused by epibionts protozoan during the fattening cycle of shrimp. To conduct the study, 2880 shrimp samples (juvenile and adults) were evaluated at the Tunas de Zaza shrimp farm for three cycles. The trend of the evaluated parameters was studied, based on weekly analysis of fresh samples and the obvious characteristics of each species. The results were analyzed using trend models, based on the least squares method. The possible differences among specific prevalence were tested by the Kruskall Wallis and Mann Whitney U nonparametric tests, using the statistical program SPSS V15. The results show that the genera of epibionts protozoa observed which exhibited greater degrees of severity (DS) in their lesions were Epistylis sp., with higher frequency (DS: 1 to 4), followed by Acineta sp. (DS: 1 to 4), Zoothamnium sp. (DS: 1 to 2), and Ascophrys (GS: 1), with a rising behavior as the culture progressed.
The undifferentiated neonatal bovine diarrhea is a multifactorial disease that affects a high proportion of calves (50% or more) causing up to 40% of mortality in the first 30 d of life. Among the infectious agents known to cause diarrhea in calves are the rotavirus and coronavirus. Rotaviruses are the major causative agents of acute gastroenteritis in different animal species. Their 11-segment genome of double ARN chain can genetically re-arrange different strains, producing a viral progeny with new or atypical phenotype. Rotaviruses have been described in the bovine Venezuelan cattle, with a prevalence of 20-30% in animals between 2-6 weeks of age, with episodes of diarrhea. The serotypes G6 and the genotype P1 have been reported with higher frequency in calves from the central region of Venezuela. In this investigation, rotavirus strains of cattle from Group A were detected by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in 32 of 280 (11.43%) stool samples of calves in 15 farms in the State of Yaracuy, Venezuela. The nucleotide sequence was obtained for one of the variants detected (A610) and the comparative analysis of the sequences of the VP8* (the VP4 fragment) corresponded to the P [5] genotype. These data constitute the first report of a strain of bovine rotavirus genotype P[5], which circulates in the States of Yaracuy, Venezuela, and can serve as a support for the inclusion of this viral group to the vaccines that are being used in the country.
In order to improve the oocyte selection for in vitro embryo production, the present work evaluated the effect of the reproductive status of postmortem Crossbred Zebu cows (pregnant [P] versus non-pregnant [NP]) on the number of recovered oocytes, the cleavage (number of cleaved embryos/number of recovered oocytes) and the blastocyst production (number of blastocyst/number of cleaved embryos) rates. Cumulus oocytes complexes (CCOs) were selected, counted and separated depending on the donor status: P cows with or without a corpus luteum (CL) and NP cows with (CL) or without (NoCL) a CL. Data for number of recovered oocytes was analyzed using the GENMOD procedure assuming a Poisson distribution, whereas data for cleavage and blastocyst production rates were analyzed using a logistic regression assuming a binomial distribution. The statistical model for all the analyses included the effects of the reproductive status (P vs. NP), presence or not of a CL (CL vs. NoCL) and the interaction of reproductive status x CL. A total of 4658 CCOs obtained from 437 ovaries was evaluated. The number of CCOs collected per ovary from P cows (12.5±2.8) was significantly higher (p<0.03) than from NP cows (9.4±2.5). On the other hand, the cleavage rate was significantly higher (p<0.006) in NoP cows (42.3+0.01%) than in P cows (34.5+0.02). Nevertheless, the interaction between reproductive status and CL affected (p<0.006) the cleavage rate: P-CL: 31.1+0.02% (76/244); P-NoCL: 38.0+0.03% (98/258); NoP-CL: 46.7+0.03% (312/738) and NoP-NoCL: 38.0+0.03% (143/376). There were not differences in blastocyst production rate from cleaved embryos for P cows (10.7+0.02%; 17/160) compared with NoP cows (10.0+0.02%; 30/312). These results show that the reproductive status of a cow should be taken into account for oocyte selection, in order to improve embryo production.
The purpose of this research was to determine the economic impact of the variations in the price of milk in a dairy farm, located in Santa Bárbara de Barinas, the State of Barinas, in Venezuela. The methodology used was interviews, data verification and reports review. The study period comprised from January 1 to December 31, 2011. The financial analysis considered both the value and structure of production costs, and the profitability indicators. The results showed that the production costs were distributed, as follows: fixed costs (44%) and variable costs (56%); the inputs with the greatest economic impact were concentrated food (47.29%) and labor cost (26.60%). The unit cost of production of 1 L of milk (Bs/L) decreased from 2.62 Bs./L to 2.43 Bs./L from the periods January-September to October-December 2011, respectively, with an increase in the unit selling price from 2.50 to 3.60 Bs./L in the periods indicated. Consequently, there were economic losses in the first period, which were set off with the incomes from the milk sales in the second period, reaching a net income (NI) of up to 80.98 thousand Bs./year. Adding the revenue from the sale of calves and some discarded animals, the total NI was 88.69 thousand Bs./year. It is concluded that, under the current scheme of price regulation in the dairy sector, the livestock production system is not sustainable, as it only generates a benefit/cost ratio of 1.10, with a return on investment of 3.03%. It is recommended that the Venezuelan Government establish corrective measures in the livestock sector to recover from the current economic crisis. Finally, the producer must keep an updated cost structure that can be used as a baseline information for the decision-making of the cattle business.
