ROMERO CUESTAS, Carlos Alberto; BUSTOS-VIVIESCAS, Brian Johan y GARCIA YERENA, Carlos Enrique. Reflections on handgrip strength and its implications in pregnancy: An underexplored and highly demanded field. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2026, vol.86, n.1, pp.153-158. Epub 14-Abr-2026. ISSN 0048-7732. https://doi.org/10.51288/00860117.
Hand grip strength has been widely used in clinical settings, however, the application of grip strength in the assessment of pregnant women has been poorly addressed. A narrative review of articles published from 2015 to 2025 in the PubMed, Google Scholar, and SciELO databases was conducted. The keywords pregnancy, handgrip strength, and grip strength were used. Based on the evidence analyzed, the systematic incorporation of hand grip strength assessment into prenatal care monitoring and control protocols is recommended, given its proven valuable contribution as a biomarker of maternal health. This practice should be maintained regularly throughout the week, beginning in early weeks of pregnancy and continuing after delivery.
