Abstract

PERDOMO CARRILLO, Daniel Antonio; CORREDOR, Zenaida  and  RAMIREZ-IGLESIA, Lílido. Physico-chemical characteristics and morphometric breeding phased of red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) in a warm tropical zone. Zootecnia Trop. [online]. 2012, vol.30, n.1, pp.099-108. ISSN 0798-7269.

A trial was conducted in Trujillo state, Venezuela, to evaluate the morphometric characteristics, physic-chemical parameters of water, density and mortality of red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.), under intensive culture in tropical conditions. The study covered three stages of production of fish in different lots. A density of 70, 30 and 15 fish/ m2 to lift (L), pre-fattening (P) and fattening (E), was used, respectively. The morphometric variables related to total length (TL) and standard (LS) in the three phases, and water parameters were analyzed using Student’s t test (P<0.05) and Pearson correlations with the SAS program. Differences were found in all morphometric measures assessed, LTL-LTP (P<0.001), LTL-LTE (P<0.001), LTP-LTE (P<0.001), LSL-LSP (P<0.001), LSLLSE (P<0.001), LSP-LSE (P<0.0019). Correlations were found (P<0.05) between the morphometric measures except for LSL-LTE and LSL-LSE. The coefficients of correlation of the total length, showed a tendency to decrease in subsequent phase, LTL-LTP (0.68), LTP-LTE (0.55). The results of the Student’s t test indicated that 100 Vol. 30(1) ZOOTECNIA TROPICAL 2012 the water hardness differences (P<0.05) in the phase P and E. We conclude that the morphometric characteristics vary according to the development and growth phase, the physic-chemical parameters of water presented similar levels to those required by the species, and mortality was 16%. You need to adjust environmental conditions in terms of animal welfare and reduce mortality.
