Abstract
ALVES MACIEL, Mitali Daian; TROIAN, Alessandra and VASCONCELOS DE OLIVEIRA, Sibele. Brazil of the agro, country of hunger: thinking strategies for sustainable development. ESPACIO ABIERTO [online]. 2022, vol.31, n.3, pp.23-41. Epub Oct 01, 2022. ISSN 2477-9601.
Brazil is one of the main food producers and exporters of agricultural commodities today. In exploring foreign markets, it demonstrates competitive advantages derived from its productive aptitude for agribusiness. However, at the same time that the country benefits from super-crops and increased agricultural productivity, a significant portion of its population lives with the problems of hunger and food insecurity. This scenario is far from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG-2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture to the people. In this sense, taking into account the plurality of production relations in Brazilian agriculture, this study discusses the ability of family farming to sustain agriculture on a sustainable basis, presenting strategies in response to SDG-2. To this end, the study made use of bibliographical research and survey of secondary data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply and Climate Observatory. It is evident that the agri-food model adopted in the country produces grains, which are not nutritious and are not intended for feeding the national population, relying on excessive use of pesticides and contributing significantly to the emission of greenhouse gases. On the other hand, there is the organic and agroecological agriculture, practiced mainly by family farmers, offering nutritious food and promoting food security. For these particularities, it is inferred that the promotion of organic and agroecological agriculture represents a potential strategy for the fulfillment of SDG-2, with a direction closer to the precepts of sustainable development.
