Abstract

BOSCAN LEAL, Antonio. The New, Positive Masculinity. Utopìa y Praxis Latinoamericana [online]. 2008, vol.13, n.41, pp.93-106. ISSN 1315-5216.

This study analyzes the influence of women’s advances on changes that have altered men’s lives and their definition of masculinity. These changes are expressed in the development of new manifestations of masculinity, some of which, due to their non-sexist and non-homophobic character, are catalogued as positive. The traits of these new, positive manifestations of masculinity have been profiled by different scholars and have been brought together in this study to elaborate a broad, plural concept of masculinity that reflects those new, multiple positive forms. The problem lies in knowing whether women and, above all, men are willing to accept a new concept of masculinity such as the one proposed herein.

Keywords : New positive masculinity; feminism; homophobia; hegemonic masculinity.
