Abstract

SALAS A, Alejandra  and  GARCIA R, Hécmy. Profile of emotional intelligence and university majors in students at the Simon Bolivar University. Revista de Ciencias Sociales [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.2, pp.226-238. ISSN 1315-9518.

This research aims to describe a profile of emotional intelligence (EI) skills according to majors (Architecture, Urbanism, Production Engineering and Electrical Engineering). The sample consisted of 126 students from the Simon Bolívar University (69 women and 57 men). To measure the IE abilities, the Trait Meta Mood Scale was used, assessing the dimensions of attention, clarity and repair. Descriptive analysis showed the same structure for the majors Urbanism, Electrical Engineering and Production: repair, attention and clarity, which suggests that students have greater abilities to maintain pleasant emotional moods or modify those that are unpleasant, and to identify the emotions experienced and a lesser ability to understand the emotions experienced. These findings suggest that students tend to modify their emotional states without a real understanding of them, which could affect their academic and professional performance.

Keywords : Emotional intelligence; emotional abilities; students.
