Resumen

CHACON HERRERA, María et al. Frequency of betahemolytic streptococci and antistreptolysin O titers in students from Aragua, Venezuela. Salus [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.1, pp.7-12. ISSN 1316-7138.

Throat swabs and blood samples were collected from 204 students to determine the frequency of betahemolytic streptococci (BHS) and ASO titers in students aged 10 to 15 years from the Girardot municipality in Aragua State,. The swabs were used for bacterial culture and subsequent BHS serogroups identification. Blood samples were used to determine ASO titers. The ASO reference level was established following the C28 A3 protocol from Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The concordance of the agglutination test titers results with the culture results was determined. 43 cultures were positive with a BHS frequency of 21.1%. 37.20% of the isolates were group B beta-hemolytic streptococci, 25.58% group A, 23% group G, 12% group F and 2% group C. The ASO reference value was up to 800 UI.mL-1, which differs from the value indicated by the diagnostic equipment used. There is no agreement among the positive results of bacterial culture and ASO titers (κ=0.0403, p=0.6061), indicating that both tests are discordant and yield different results.

Palabras clave : Streptococcus pyogenes; betahemolytic streptococci; reference value.
