The intrinsical mechanisms in the production of the osteoarthritis and the course of the disease are not known from the pathological standpoint, it is known that it is characterized by deterioration of the articular cartilage surfaces and remodelling of the underlying bone. There are several theories to try to explain the etiology, and the pathogenesis of the osteoarthritis affecting the temporomandibular joint. These theories remains unclear. It has been said that many etiologic factors may cause injury to the cartilage cell.
