To this day, in the school of dentistry of the Central University of Venezuela, no test or index are taken prior or after any periodontal treatment, which could allow to verify if the procedures done give satisfactory results in the patients. The objective of this study, was to evaluate the basic periodontal treatments done by the students to their patients, in the clinics of the third floor during the evening turn, for which all patients in their first visit during period of a year, a total of  80 patients were evaluated, in 46 of those patients the study was done completely. To this group of 46 the Periodontal Index of Rusell and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index were applied of the beginning and the end of the periodontal treatment. After comparing the average values found for both index, at the beginning and the end of the treatment, statistically significant differences were found after having analyze the results with the Wilcoxon’s test (this test is not parametric), which shows that the periodontal treatment were effective. It is necessary the systematic use of the P.I. and the S.O.H.I. in the clinical services of the university, because they will constitute an experience for learning to the students, also a database for the faculty and for investigation purposes, as well as a great contribution to the prevention of periodontal diseases in the community.
