The objective of this study was to evaluate the design of removable partial dentures and the written prescription accompanying the master cast delivered by private practicioners to commercial dental laboratory technicians. 434 questionaries forms were delivered to 6 commercial dental laboratory. The designs done in the master cast were compared with 137 designs performed by undergraduate dental students from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. The results showed that private practicioners delegate the design of the removable partial denture to the dental technician criteria. It was also noticed that there is not a philosophy towards the use of direct retainers. It is suggested that this results should be taken into account for teaching undergraduate students, graduated and continuing education programs.
