LOPEZ CHAGIN, Arnoldo. Ethiopatogenics Risk Factors of Verrucous Carcinoma in the Oral Cavity. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2000, vol.38, n.2, pp.9-14. ISSN 0001-6365.
Verrucous carcinoma is well-differentiated variant of squamous cell carcinoma that mainly appears in the oral cavity mucosa and it´s chew-tobacco associated. This retrospective study was undertaken in a attempt to determine the risk factors relationed with this oral cavity neoplasm. Of a survey of 5435 speciments accesioned during the period of 1965 through 1996 in the Biopsies Services of the Hospital Oncológico "Padre Machado" and the Instituto de Oncología "Luis Razetti" of Caracas, there were 1369 squamous cell carcinoma. Thirty two (2.3%) of them were diagnosed as verrucous carcinoma. The treated risks variables included association with tobacco and alcohol products, chronic inflamations or irritations as poorly fitted dentures and others. Smoked tobacco, especially in the cigarrette form was the most common of the habits in 81.25% of the patients, and from them, the 69.2% consumed it in a 31 to 55 years period, in wich symptoms of the lesions appeared. This investigation shows that the use of tobacco products are highly related with the verrucous carcinoma in the oral cavity and that a long time of consumption is necessary for the neoplasm to develop.
