ABSTRACT: The polymerase Chain reaction (PCR) was applied for detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection,in biopsies taken fron clinically normal oral mucosa of 20 subjects and clinical lesions of 40 patients. PCR for HPV DNA amplification was performed using consensus primers MY09/MY11 and subsequent typing for HVP of high/intermedium (HR/MR), or low risk (LR). For typing 2,4,6,11,13,16,18 and 32. We demonstrated the presence of HPV viral genome in 55% (22/40) of the oral benign lesions (OBL) and 10%(2/20) of the control samples .In the PCR+ OBL, we observed 90% of HPV -LR and 9,1% of HPV -LR/HR: In the control samples we determined 5% of HPV -LR and 5% (1/20) of HPV -LR/HR. This study demonstrated a high incidence of HPV in oral Benign lesions in the Venezuelan population.
