The effects of female sex hormones on the gingiva are well-established. Hyperplastic edematous gingivitis has been associated with puberty, pregnancy and oral contraceptives. The ability of male sex hormones to induce gingival enlargement has also been described. The aim of this paper was to present a gingival overgrowth, in a 20-year-old male body-builder who had been taking high doses of testosterone, and to evaluate the linkage between this drug and the progression of periodontal disease.
