The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Prevotella sp. and Porphyromonas sp. in adult patients with periodontitis. Forty five adult patients, aged between 25 and 65 years old, were included in this study. Thirty of them with periodontitis and 15 periodontally healthy (group control). The samples were taken of the periodontal sacs and the sublingual plaque in sick and healthy patients respectively by means of paper cones and transported in pre-reduced thioglycolate broth. The samples were streaked on blood agar Schaedler base with 107 and 108 supplements in order isolate anaerobic bacteria. The identification was carried out by both conventional and ATB expression system. From 30 patients with periodontitis, Prevotellas sp. were isolate in 13 (40.33%), Porphyromonas sp in 4 (13.33%) and 5 (16.67%) patients. The identification by microbiological methods of Prevotella sp. and Porphyromonas sp. represents an important alternative to the adult periodontitis diagnostic.
