Resumen

Abstract This current paper is a preliminary and exploratory study made out of 102 HIV/AIDS patients who assist to the infecto-contagious deceases department Dr. Elsa La Corte ; at the School of Dentistry at the Central University of Venezuela, between 1999 and 2000, as an answer of the service needs, opened in 1998, with the purpose of getting an accurate profile of the patients, and generate an information system related to the nation´s reality. The patients were classified according to their age, sex, family environment, sexual orientation and access to dentist treatment. The information was provided by an anonymously survey filled by the patients. The results show 45.09% of them with ages between 36 and 45 years old; 79.4% male; 69.6% single; 49% knew a little about the disease, 84.3% were sexually infected; 94.2% have non-infected children, because they were born before the mother was infected; 54.8% have homo and bisexual orientation; 69.6% refer to be sexually active; 83.3% have had between 1 and 2 couples, and 16.6% between 3 or 4 couples; 69.6% do not have any kind of protection while having sex; 73.3% said that their couple knows about the infection; 75.5% told their dentist about the infection . These results were used to design the medical history which is used at the service and allows to create investigation guides which are being developed by the professor’s staff of the service.
