SUMMARY: In the present work, a study by light and transmission electron microscopy was done in order to study muscular alterations produced in the tongue muscle of squamous cell carcinoma patients. The ultrastructural abnormalities included, contractile and sarcotubular systems alterations. Atrophy and segmentary necrosis was observed, proliferation of vacuoles, lysosomes and lipofucsin granules was also observed. The mononuclear infiltrate was formed by neutrophils, macrophages and mast cells. This study represents the first report about ultrastructural alterations in the tongue muscle produced by this malignant pathology.
