Abstract There are some studies related to the treatment of Denture Stomatitis (D.S.) induced by Candida, using topical antifungal agents like Miconazole gel. Nevertheless, there are some reports that indicates the presence of recidival cases. The purpose of this study was detected Candida species in recidival cases of patients with D.S., treated with Miconazole gel (Daktarin®). In this study, we selected 30 patients and they were clasiffied into three groups of 10 patients each one: Group A: Medicated with Miconazole gel, four times each day, for 21 days, Group B: Medicated with Miconazole gel, three times each day, for 21 days and Group C (Control Group): Medicated with water, four times each day for 21 days. Two samples were taken from each patient (one from the palate and the other from the denture), 16 days after finishing treatment with Miconazole gel (patients of groups A and B) and 2 days after finishing treatment with water (Control Group). The results of this study indicated that C. albicans was the most frequent species found in recidival cases in all the groups. Other species found in this study were: Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis and Candida parapsilosis. This recidival cases reported in the study are important because there could origin other treatment modalities to eliminate D.S. induced by Candida.
