Abstract Considering that dental caries is a disease produced by many of the microorganisms that conform the dental plaque, among them Rothia dentocariosa, we have decided to identify this bacterium in patients who presented this disease. In this study 65 patients from School of Dentistry at U.C.V. were selected, and were divided in two groups: From the first group (32 patients with dental caries), dental plaque samples were taken; from the second group (32 patients with dental caries), carious lesions samples were taken and furthermore a sample of dental plaque was taken from a patient who never had suffered dental caries. All the samples were transported to laboratory in soya tripticase broth and were cultivated in soya tripticase agar media in aerobic conditions. The obtained results demostrated that R. dentocariosa was found in 6 patients from first group (18%), in 3 patients from second group (9%) an was not possible to identify this specie in the patient without dental caries. Is important to emphasize that is the first time that this microorganism is identiffied in our country.
