Abstract
ESCALONA, LA and RIVERA, H.. Evaluación inicial de Índices Periodontales en pacientes Diagnosticados con Síndrome de Sjögren. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2004, vol.42, n.1, pp.29-33. ISSN 0001-6365.
Few studies have been reported about the periodontal condition in SS afected patients. Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the periodontal condition in a group of patients diagnosed as PSS, SSS and to compare with healthy control subjects. Material and Methods: 7 (SS) patients, 3 of them diagnosed as SSS and 4 as PSS respectively, according to the European criteria reported by Vitali et al., 1997 and 6 sistemically healthy individuals. The clinical periodontal parameters evaluated were: Plaque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), and probing depht (PD). Results: In the parameters evaluated, we observed statistical significant differences. The SS patients showed lower number of teeth present than the control group (p<0.005). The plaque and gingival indexes were higher in the SS population (p<0.005), whereas the probing depht did not showed differences between the studied groups. Conclusions: Our results suggested that SS could be a risk factor for periodontal disease, and the presence of plaque index and gingivitis higher than the control group could be also related to decrease in the salivary flow rate.
