Abstract Gonorrhoea is one of the commonest sexual-transmitted infections caused by bacteria (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) arround the world. Genital manifestations of gonorrhoea always can be seen but oral manifestations of this disease are generally asimpthomatic andare similar than lesions like stomatitis by streptococci, herpes and necrotizing gingivitis. For this reason is necesary to detect N. gonorrhoeae in order to establish diagnosis of oral gonorrhoea. The aim of this study was to detect this microorganism in oropharingeal mucosa of patients with genital gonorrhoea. Fifty three patients with genital manifestations of gonorrhoea were selected and samples of oropharingeal mucosa from 34 patients were taked because these patients had oral manifestations. The samples were transported to the laboratory in Amies transport medium and then were cultivated in Agar Thayer Martin medium into mycroaerophilical conditions at 35ºC ± 2ºC for 24 hours. Detection of N. gonorrhoeae was possible by obsrrvation of colonies that grew in Agar Thayer Martin medium, observation of typical Gram negative diplococcal cells and positive reactions for catalase and oxidase. Findings of this investigation revelated that N. gonorrhoeae was detected in 2 (6%) out of 34 patients. These patients were an heterosexual couple who had previouslly orogenital relations
