ROMERO UZCATEGUI, Yajaira. Hábitos que influyen en el proceso salud-enfermedad bucal Estudio etnográfico en grupo de madres de la comunidad de San Isidro, estado Mérida, 2003. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2005, vol.43, n.3, pp.256-261. ISSN 0001-6365.

Abstract Household oral health practices and habits in the San Isidro community, Mérida state, Venezuela. 2003 Traditionally, the study of the oral health, as a component of the overall health, has been approached from a reduced and biological view. Nowadays, a more comprehensive approach which allows the study of the organic causes, consequences, and treatment of diseases is required. In recent years, a concern towards a change in perspective of the study of oral health can be seen in some studies which have incorporated qualitative techniques and the design of ethnographic studies. The present study shows the interrelationships that exist among people, culture, and society concerning the household oral health practice. The general objective was to analyze the people’s social and cultural behaviors about oral health in the families of San Isidro community. Data related to the mothers’ contexts, activities, and beliefs were collected. The results indicate that people consider the dental pain as their main and most significant dental ailment among the members of their family. Solutions to that complaint is a task fulfilled by the mothers and a non-specialized dentist. It was also possible to identify the different mechanisms by which those people seek aid to solve their dental problems
