Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that determinated the Eruption of the third molars in groups of subjects with age between 18 and 25 years old.  MATERIALS AND METHOD: Standardized panoramic radiographs were taken for 150 subjects (96 females and 54 males) with an average age of 20 years. The radiographic features studied were the distance between the anterior border of the mandibular ramus and the distal aspect of the mandibular second molar that show the space available for the eruption that third molar, the mesiodistal crown width, the angulation of tooth and the distance between the Xi point and the distal aspect of the mandibular second molar to know how the mandibular growth determinate the retention of the third molar. RESULTS: The space between the anterior border of the mandibular ramus and the distal aspect of the mandibular second molar was 10 mm (SD +/- 3.75 mm), for the mesiodistal crown width this was of 15 mm (S/D +/- 4.86 mm), in 103 (68.6%) right third molar the retromolar space was significantly smaller, in 92 (61.3%) of the left third molar the situation was similar, the more frequently angulation was of 45° and 40°, the 75.2 % of the third molars had angulation lees than 45°, the more common distance for the Xi-M2 was 30 mm ( SD +/- 6.51 mm). CONCLUSIONS: The most significant variables associated with the third molar impactation were inadequate space, the crown width and the angulation. The mandibular growth was not important
