According to estimations made by ONUSIDA during 2001, HIV infects almost 11 men, women and children worldwide every minute. We should bring to notice that the periodontal diseases observed in children with HIV/AIDS could be the first clinical symptom of the infection. Rare periodontal diseases can be observed in these patients. Objective: Determine the presence of periodontal disease in HIV/AIDS children that attended CAPEI/UCV during the 1999-2004 period.  Materials and methods: A retrospective review of 100 clinical records of HIV/AIDS patients between 4 and 16 years of age was realized, in order to establish groups according to the periodontal disease present. Results: Plaque related Gingivitis: 50%; Non-plaque related Gingival Erythema 20%; Periodontitis 3%; Pericoronaritis 3%; Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis 1% and no disease 23%. Conclusions: Periodontal diseases related to HIV/AIDS have unique characteristics and help identify potentially inmunosupressed patients.
