GUERRA, María Elena et al. VIH/SIDA: tejidos blandos bucales en niños de 0-4 años 2002-2004. Acta odontol. venez [online]. 2006, vol.44, n.2, pp.221-226. ISSN 0001-6365.
Background: Children don't escape from the infection caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), being the vertical transmission their main mode of infection. In the literature, it has been established that the presence of oral manifestations are indicative of the progress of the infection. Objective: The objective of this study was to diagnose oral manifestations in Venezuelan children VIH (+) and VIH (-) whose mother were HIV seropositive. Material and Methods: An instrument was elaborated that consisted of two parts, an interview to the mother to determine social variables and a clinical exam to the child to evaluate oral manifestations. 59 children were studied aged 0 to 4 years; 32 were VIH(+) and 27 were VIH (-) vertically exposed. The statistical analyses were based on the chi-square distribution and the odds ratio. Results: Statistical significance was observed between infants VIH(+) and infants VIH (-) vertically exposed for the following oral lesions: Queilitis angular; Xerostomia; linear Eritema; Gingivitis ; Herpes Simple Virus. Conclusions: Oral lesions were more frequent in children VIH (+) than in children VIH (-) vertically exposed, being the former dramatically affected.
