The objective of this work was to evaluate adaptability and grain yield stability of 16 maize, Zeas mays L., genotypes using the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model (AMMI). Trials were carried out at six environments during the period from 2000 to 2001 in Yaracuy State, Venezuela. An experimental random block design with four replicates was used. Each experimental unit consisted of two 5 m-rows (0.70 m between rows and 0.20 m between plants). The environment (E), Genotype (G) and G x E interaction explained 36%, 22% and 42% of the total sum of squares, respectively. The first two principal components of the analysis were significant (P<0,001), explaining 37% and 27% of the interaction sum of squares. Hybrids Himeca - 2020 and X-1409 BW showed good and stable yields in all environments. The most efficient environment in the discrimination of genotypes was Yaritagua 2001. It was possible to identify superior maize genotypes selected with specific or wide adaptation by using the AMMI model.
