Eight microsatellite loci (bnlg1484, bnlg2323, bnlg1601, bnlg1194, dupssr34, mmc0501, umc1545 y umc1594) were used to analyze and to estimate the genetic relationship among 21 maize inbred lines introduced from CIMMYT in order to determine their usefulness for INIA´s maize breeding program. Genetic distance analysis revealed that the information obtained from the 8 microsatellite loci allowed the differentiation of the lines under study. The grouping algorithm was based on Ward method, and the dendrogram resulted in 5 groups, which in most cases coincide with the line pedigree information. These results along with agronomic trait information is of great utility for planning crosses in the breeding program. The loci sequence was obtained from the maize data base (Maize Data Bank: http://www.maizegdb.org). The total number of bands produced was 148, with 109 being polymorphic. The content of polymorphic information (PIC) for the markers was high for all loci, with an average of 0,91, agreeing with the general observation that increasing the number of bands per initiator also increases the PIC values.
