BERLINGERI, Chiara A; CARRERO G, Omar; BENITEZ, Carmen y MEDINA, Alexis. Inventory and yield of the vegetal species of an operated forest ribereño for ornamental use, in the municipality Escuque, state Trujillo, Venezuela. Agronomía Trop. [online]. 2007, vol.57, n.2, pp.77-88. ISSN 0002-192X.
The usage of the natural vegetation of a forest located at the "Sector Boquerón" (Escuque, State Trujillo) was analyzed. With aid of settlers who made use of those resources, the local knowledge about management of wild plants species exploited for ornamental purposes was recorded. Sixteen species belonging to the families Araceae, Heliconiaceae, Cyclanthaceae, Arecaceae, Davalliaceae, Driopteridaceae and Costaceae were collected and identified. An economical analysis was done for this activity and the results were compared against those of coffee production, which is a common plantation in this area. The Net Present Value, Expected Soil Value, and the Benefit - Cost ratio were calculated. When the working expenses was considered in harvesting the forest and coffee activities, the first was more profitable. Otherwise, when the working expenses were not considered, coffee culture was more profitable, in spite of the greater effort that is invested on harvesting it. A sensitivity analysis shown that coffee production was more sensitive to variation of the salary in a daily base, which reveals that this activity is more labor intensive. Strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of the species were discussed.
