ORTIZ DOMINGUEZ, Aída; PEREZ, Antonio; OCHOA, Jesús y LAZO, José Vicente. Characterization of red rice comes from lots of rice seed part I. Agronomía Trop. [online]. 2007, vol.57, n.3, pp.147-156. ISSN 0002-192X.
The red rice, Oryza sativa L., causes severe losses in the production chain of this crop in Venezuela, mainly in the seed production, where the quality standard doesnot allow more than 2 grains of red rice (RR) perkilogram of certificated seed. The objective of this workwas to characterize morpho-physiologically the genotypes of RR found in seed lots subject to certification located in Portuguesa State. In this investigationthere were characterized plants that were originated ofrice caryopsis that showed red pericarp, found in seed lots subject to certification and were comparedagainst the varieties of rice FONAIAP 1, Fedearroz 50, D-Sativa; ZETA 15® and Cimarron. Seventeen (17) characteristics of morphology of the plant and grainswere evaluated, and a descriptive statistical analysis toeach variable was made. We found that 85% of the evaluated RR showed straw color glumes, 73% did notshow awn; 75% showed medium and large grain sizeas rice varieties; however, the grains of RR were morewidth than rice varieties. We also found that 58% of the RR had erect growth habit and position of the flagleaf; the flowering, Nº tillers plant-1 and Nº paniclesplant-1 were similar to rice varieties, although there wasa lot variation between them. The Nº grains pl-1 was variable, but of very importance due to the highproduction of some genotypes joined to great percentof shattering. The major RR evaluated in this workprobably are evolving to mimetic forms called the Weedy rice-variety types (WRVT).
