MONTILLA, Rafael; LA CRUZ, Luís y DURAN, Darío. Geographical distribution of melanoloma viatrix hendel (Diptera: Richardiidae) in Trujillo, Venezuela. Agronomía Trop. [online]. 2008, vol.58, n.4, pp.403-407. ISSN 0002-192X.
In order to contribute to the knowledge on the distribution of the worm, M. viatrix, of the pineapples in Trujillo State, the varieties attacked, and to determine some factors that allow its dispersion, there were settled traps with attractive based in hydrolyzed protein (a month/parcel) in pineapples farms in the agricultural municipalities of the state. Additionally, in a random way, we run out interviews to farmers, buyers, and salesmen of pineapples to know about fitosanitary issues of the fruits, destiny of the fresh product, and handling of the rejected ones. To evaluate the distribution of the worm we took into account the presence of the fly in the traps, the entrance of pineapples samples into the laboratory of INIA-Trujillo, and the information from the interviewed people. The results shown that M. viatrix is spread all over the municipalities where pineapples is cultivated (Andrés Bello, Carache, Carvajal, Miranda Motatán, Pampán, Pampanito, Rangel, Sucre, Trujillo), which are located from 50 to 1300 meters above the sea level, and attack all the varieties of pineapples (Yellow Valera, Red Valera, Joba, Capachera, Puerto Rico). Moreover we found that the truck drivers are the main way of dispersion, since they take the fresh product (Fruit) to the sales point through the different states, and we found that the residues (sobremature pineapples) normally is throw away near the sites of sale.
