The geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) are the most important tools to implement high effi cient management of modernization and agro-ecological zoning of sugarcane, Saccharum offi cinarum, production. The objective of this research was to evaluate the spatial distribution and characterize the level of productivity of sugarcane crop in Huasteca Potosina area in San Luis de Potosí, Mexico, through remote sensing techniques. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), weather and soil databases and the management systems under which the crop is grown were used to evaluate inherent productivity. ILWIS 3.3 and ESRI ArcGis 9.2. software were used for cartographic synthesis. NDVI was successfully used for sugarcane condition assessment: canopy cover, vigour and area identifi cation. The results indicate that the sugarcane zone is precisely located for good crop yields, however were detect marginal yields. Each zone has a similar combination of constraints and potentials for land use and serves as a focus for the targeting of recommendations designed to improve the existing sugarcane land use situation. The sugarcane areas at Huasteca Potosina requires a systematic effort towards the planning of land use activities in the most appropriate way, apart from several other institutional and policy programmed initiatives to improvement the profi tably and productivity
