DE GOUVEIA PEREZ, María del C; GAMEZ, Arnaldo J e PEREZ, Henry R. Participatory evaluation and selection of black bean cultivars. Agronomía Trop. [online]. 2014, vol.64, n.1-2, pp.49-59. ISSN 0002-192X.
In participatory evaluations, farmers play a key role in cultivar selection because of their local knowledge and systemic perception of the crop. They actively integrate in the research process and synergy is achived with researchers to obtain technologies that really suit their conditions and needs. This study aimed to facilitate the participation of farmers in the evaluation and selection of cultivars of black beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), allowing the incorporation of new cultivars to local production systems. The study was conducted in the community of Santa Rosa in Ceiba Mocha, Guarico State. The methodology for open and absolute evaluation was applied and allowed the identification of criteria of local selection or preference of farmers and the acceptance or rejection of the 18 cultivars evaluated. The number of pods/plant, number of grains/pod and yield (Y) in kg ha-1 were determined. The cultivars with higher percentages of acceptance by farmers, corresponded to: Tacarigua (88%), Sesentera (75%), Local Guárico (75%) and Linea 13 (74%), using as important selection criteria, those related to Y, mainly the number of pods per plant, in addition to biotic resistance to pests and diseases. The results showed similarities with the evaluation of the technical team, hence the need for breeders to take into account the criteria and opinions of local farmers in the selection, as they are the potential users of such cultivars.
