PEREZ CHACIN, Orquídea G; TRUJILLO DIAZ, Iselen E y FUCHS DELGADO, Morela M. Phenol content in ‘Pineo Gigante’ and ‘Cambur Manzano’ musaceae clones. Agronomía Trop. [online]. 2014, vol.64, n.3-4, pp.201-210. ISSN 0002-192X.
Phenols are phytochemicals compounds belonging to the secondary metabolism of plants. In Musa, is important role in the maintenance of the plant due to stress caused by nutrient deficiency or microorganisms attacks). Similarly, they were attributed medicinal properties in various health conditions, relating this fact to their phenol composition, which has appointed them to treat cardiovascular disorders, prevention and treatment of some cancers, gastrointestinal problems, and infections and muscle contractures. The objective of this research was to determine the phenol content in leaves of the cultivars ‘Pineo Gigante’ (Musa AAA) and ‘Cambur Manzano’ (Musa AAB), developed under in vivo conditions (leaf and pseudostem) and in vitro (leaves) both qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative results expressed by color changes indicate that the ‘Cambur Manzano’ has a higher amount of phenols in comparison to the ‘Pineo Gigante’. Regarding cultivars in vitro and in vivo quantitative level, it was found that the ‘Cambur Manzano’ is higher compared to the ‘Pineo Gigante’. Similarly, it was found that in vitro cultivars have a higher amount of phenols compared to those evaluated in vivo. The results obtained would be very useful for obtaining phenolic extracts, which can be used for different purposes.
