There are many controversial publications in regard to the metabolic syndrome; this controversy is even greater in those dealing with children and adolescents. Many of the reports relative to the incidence of this condition cannot be compared because of the different criteria employed for the diagnosis. With the aim of unifying criteria, a group of venezuelan researchers met for the discussion of this condition between 2007 and 2008. This document is the product of these workshops. We are presenting the conclusions of the group that worked in the area of children and adolescents; suggestions for diagnostic criteria to be used with both clinical and epidemiological purposes are presented.
