NOGUERA BRIZUELA, Dalmacia; MARQUEZ, Julio César; CAMPOS CAVADA, Isabel y SANTIAGO, Rafael. Complemantary feeding in healthy children from 6 to 24 months of age. Arch Venez Puer Ped [online]. 2013, vol.76, n.3, pp.126-135. ISSN 0004-0649.
Complementary feeding is defined as the process that begins when the consumption of solely breast milk is no longer enough to meet the nutritional requirements of nursing babies and it becomes necessary to add other foods while continuing with human lactation. The objectives of complementary feeding are: to provide the energy and nutrients needed for growth and development without weaning the child, create proper feeding habits, to stimulate psycho-emotional and sensorial development and its integration into the family diet. It is necessary to consider the physiological basis to initiate the complementary feeding: neurological, renal, digestive and immunologic maturation. It should meet the following requirements: timely, adequate, safe and perceptive. Recommendations are made based on the documents of international and national organizations. Risks of beginning complementary feeding either too early or too late are stated.
Palabras clave : complementary feeding; nutritional requirements; development; nursing babies.
