Abstract

Introduction: Molluscum Contagiosum (MC) is a self-limited cutaneous infection with benign course caused by a DNA virus of the Poxviridae family. Imiquimod 5% cream therapy has shown to be useful eradicating this virus; however, its use has been undermined by the local adverse effects that it produces. Sequential use of Urea 10% lotion may improve skin barrier function by decreasing the occurrence of adverse effects caused by imiquimod. Objective: Determine the effectiveness of Imiquimod 5% cream after exfoliation plus occlusion and Urea 10% lotion in children with Molluscum Contagiosum. Methods: Prospective study, clinical trial, controlled, double-blind, cross-sectional, epidemiological study. Patients between 2 and 12 years of age were randomly assigned. Instructions for the use of topical treatment were given. Efficacy was assessed by percentage clearance, weeks of treatment and adherence at three control points for 12 weeks. Results: We studied 151 children and adolescents, 77 in the experimental group and 74 in the control group. The experimental group showed healing in 84.3% while the control group, only 13.51%. 22.08% and 30.56% of the patients in the experimental group during the first and second evaluation respectively had local adverse reactions: erythema, pruritus, peeling; none of sufficient magnitude to discontinue treatment. Conclusions: Imiquimod was well tolerated and effective in this study. The prolonged duration of treatment and the appearance of local adverse reactions require monitorization.
