Abstract

HERRERA, Edimar; ORTUNIO, Magaly; RIVAS, Aura  and  GUEVARA, Harold. Health care associated infections in newborns. Arch Venez Puer Ped [online]. 2017, vol.80, n.3, pp.88-91. ISSN 0004-0649.

The incidence of health care associated infections (HCAI) in neonatal care units is very high, leading to a greater in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Objective: To determine the microorganisms present in HCAI in hospitalized newborns of the Neonatology Service of the Ciudad Hospitalaria Dr. Enrique Tejera. Methodology: Field, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The study population included all hospitalized newborns with the following criteria: gestational age under 37 weeks, weight under 2500 grams and age between 72-96 hours of life. Results: Gestational age was between 32 to 36 weeks, female gender was predominant with 53.3%, average weight at birth was 1600±392.5 gr. 46.7% of blood cultures were positive, with Candida 20.10% as the most frequently isolated organism, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae 13.3%. There was growth in 80% of hand swabs obtained from family members involved in the newborn’s care, with Bacilus subtilis as the most frequently isolated microorganism (33.33%), followed by Staphylococcus coagulase negative (25.0%). Conclusion: In terms of the micro-organism obtained in the newborn’s blood and in hand swabs from the kin care, there was similarity in the isolated microorganism: Klebsiella pneumoniae; this was an individual finding, because growth of a microorganism in the hand swab of the family member did not necessary match with the microorganism isolated from the respective newborn’s blood culture.
