Abstract

OLANO GOSSWEILER, Carolina et al. Evaluación de los estados de hipertrombicidad en la enfermedad celíaca del adulto. Gen [online]. 2006, vol.60, n.3, pp.189-192. ISSN 0016-3503.

Celiac disease (CD) is an enteropathy affecting the small intestine in genetically predisposed children and adults, precipitated by the ingestion of gluten-containing foods. Due to the villous atrophy there could be a lack of vitamin K. This deficiency produces prothrombotic disorders due to the reduction in Vitamin K dependant protein C and S levels. With the aim of studying this prothrombotic disorders we analyzed 20 adult with CD, 15 females and 5 males, age range 15-51 ys. Six individuals (30%) were diagnosed not more than one year before, and 14 individuals (70%) more than one year before. Eleven patients did not keep a gluten free diet and nine of them kept a strict gluten free diet. Two patients had thrombotic disorders, one of them with portal vein thrombosis and the other with bleeding. Protein C, Protein S and antithrombin III levels were determined. A reduction in Protein C level was found in eleven patients (55%). In four of them the reduction was severe. The results were not statistically significative for none of the serinproteasas tested. The literature search show few papers describing the association between CD and thrombosis, without any definite conclusion in relation to the etiology. The lack of similar studies made not possible to compare this study with others. It was concluded that more studies are needed to know if the prothrombotic disorders are due to malabsorption or to another related disease.
