Abstract

The goal of this study was to evaluate the behavior of Esophageal Cancer in a sample of 37 patients gathering the data from the clinical files during 24 years (1980-2004) at the Hospital "Dr. Miguel Pérez Carreño" in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The predominant symptom was dysphagia, followed by weight. lost The most frequent endoscopic lesion was stenosis with prevalence at the distal third part of the esophagus At histology, epidermoid carcinoma represented the highest percentage (62.16%) followed by adenocarcinoma (5.4%). Most of the patients were referred to oncological centers, 17.6% had a percutaneous gastrostomy performed and 2.9% had surgical treatment such as esophagectomy. The patient's follow up was difficult, since most of them did not return to their appointments.
