Resumen

LEON, Yusmary et al. Análisis bacteriológico y fungicida del ortoftalaldehido: Experiencia de uso en el Servicio de Gastroenterología del Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo. Gen [online]. 2006, vol.60, n.4, pp.309-311. ISSN 0016-3503.

The use of Endoscopes and the same non-disposable material from one patient to the next implies the possibility of transmitting a group of diseases, such as HIV, Hepatitis, TB, multiple bacterial infections, among others, causing high morbid mortality rates associated with contamination of the equipment, and therefore, disinfecting and sterilizing techniques of these materials must be strict. The cleansing and disinfecting process of endoscopes represent a challenge for the medical personnel and nurses that work at an Endoscope Unit; this fact became the purpose of this investigation: To assess the experience of the Gastroenterology Service of the Maracaibo University Hospital with the use of Orthopthalaldehyde as a bactericide and fungicide. Materials & Methods: The high level disinfecting and sterilizing protocol of the Gastroenterology Service of the Maracaibo University Hospital was followed. For the bacteriological and fungicidal analyses, the samples were processed in transport media and cultures appropriate for this purpose. Results: No bacterial or fungicidal growth was observed using Rosasulina as an indicator for 24 - 48 hours with a daily follow-up for 10 days. Conclusions: Orthopthalaldehyde prevented growth of bacteria and fungi for 14 days. Following the cleansing and disinfecting protocol of the Service, the risk of nosocomial infections are minimized.
