ORTIZ, Andres et al. Absceso hepático amibiano en la consulta de adultos en el servicio de Gastroenterología Dr. Alí Rivas, Hospital Jesús Yerena Lídice, entre los años 2000 y Mayo 2006. Gen [online]. 2007, vol.61, n.2, pp.115-117. ISSN 0016-3503.
The authors conducted a retrospective evaluation of the patients attending the Gastroenterology Unit of the Hospital Jesus Yerena Lídice between the years 2000 and May 2006 with the diagnosis of liver amebic abscess. Of a total of 65 patients, 16 were included, with ages ranging between 24 and 75 years (average of 41, 00 years old), of whom 71,42% (n=12) were male and 25,00% (n=4) were female. 81,25% (n=13) had abdominal pain as their main complaint at admission; fever (78,57%; n= 11) and tenderness in the right upper quadrant (56,25%; n= 9) were the most common clinical features. A history of diarrhea was present in 6 patients (37,50%). We did not find a relationship between the number or size of the abscesses with the grade of leukocytosis at admission. The right lobe was the most frequent site of appearance (87,50%; n=14). Abscesses in the left lobe (n=2; 12,50%) were the only ones that required drainage. The average days of hospitalization were 7,25, ranging between 1-24 days.
