This review article analyzes the possible uses of probiotics in the treatment of the irritable bowel syndrome, evaluating the physiology of the intestinal barrier, the interactions of the microbiota with this barrier and itÊs repercussions on the immune system and on the autonomic and central nervous systems. Furthermore, it analyzes the different physiopathologic mechanisms of the irritable bowel syndrome, and the mechanism of action of the probiotics, and analyzes the possible use of probiotics for symptomatic improvement of the patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
