Introduction: Esophageal Cancer ranks ninth among malignant neoplasias worldwide and is associated to smoking and alcohol consumption. In „HospitalVargas de Caracas‰ its ranked number 11 among the top 15 (2.5%) cases of cancer annually discharged. Objective: Determine the tobacco and alcohol consumption in patients admitted for esophageal cancer in "Hospital Vargas de Caracas" during the period 2004 to 2009. Methods: We performeda retrospective, descriptive study, after reviewing the charts of 24 patients admitted for esophageal cancer diagnosis. We used central tendency measures for interpretation of results. Results: 21 (87.5%) patients were male and 3 (12.5%) female. The average age was 61 years. 83.3% (20) reported smoking over 24 packs-years and alcohol consumption greater than 120 g / day. Histologically, 87.5% (21) corresponded to squamous cell carcinoma located in 1 / 3 of the esophagus in 58.3% (14). 3 patients (12.5%) were diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma. Conclusion and Recommendation: Squamous cell carcinoma in 87.5% was the most common histopathological finding among the reviewed charts. 83% of patients had a significant association to smoking and alcohol, thus, we recommend the implementation of a joint prevention and health promotionprogram about the management of risk factors of this disease between the Venezuelan Society of Gastroenterology and VenezuelaÊs Anti-Cancer Society, the control of risk factors of this disease
